Growing Healthy Children

Growing healthy children in today’s world is a challenge. We live in a fast paced world, where both parents work and people rarely have the time to slow down; raising healthy children requires a conscious effort.

Nutrition is one of the greatest challenges for families. Cooking wholesome, low fat, healthy food takes time and money. After a long day at work, and an even longer commute, it is so tempting to pick up something from a drive thru. Fast food restaurants offer healthier alternatives, but overall, they are still higher in fat and calories than homemade food.

If a parent does have the time to cook, they may not have the money to purchase good food. A survey of the items in any local grocery store tells the same story. Fresh produce, whole grains, and meat items cost more than frozen meals and dry goods. Sweet goods are mass produced at the fraction of the price of whole grain bread.  Sugary cereals are cheap, while whole grain alternatives cost significantly more.

Many parents are at a loss for how to raise healthy children on the food alternatives that are available to them. Pediatricians can provide support to families by offering education and meal planning advice to enable families to make healthier food choices. Many times physicians also have printed literature available and some offer nutritional seminars to patients.
